Now, here is a new example. The audio track is a clip from "Super Trouper" by ABBA. First you hear it as it might sound on a modern CD re-release. Modern CDs are about 10 dB louder than those released in the mid-1980s, so I applied 10 dB of hard limiting to the audio.
Sounds OK? Well, hang on and then next you'll hear the same audio clip as it sounds when directly taken from the original 1980s CD, with no extra compression, limiting, or clipping applied. The vocals sound pretty much the same, but WOW! You can suddenly hear DRUMS! So much for the myth that processing the audio on a CD to make it louder "ADDS PUNCH". You can hear just how much "punch" is TAKEN AWAY by modern CD mastering techniques!Tags: Loudness war wars CD digital audio compression mastering remastered overcompressed clipped clipping hypercompression |
