Cauliflower ear is the nickname given to a hematoma occurring in the ear due to impact or rough abrasion. The impact forces the skin from the cartilage and the resulting cavity fills with blood like a balloon. The blood cannot circulate and eventually dies, also killing the cartilage, and thus, deforming the ear.
This can be prevented by draining the ear often, ice, and compression. Wear a head gear for a week or so until the ear can heal and you're good to go.
The "operation" is performed by icing the ear for 10~ minutes until numb, then rubbing the area with a Q-tip dipped in rubbing alcohol. Use a diabetic syringe (31 guage, 1cc, shortest needle length -- preferred) and drain the fluid.
One will have to do this a handful of times for about a week.
Not a big deal, just keep clean, before and after. Needles can never be used more than once, and needles should never be inserted more than once because the needle head gets damaged on the first try, so if you screw up, you have to bust out a new one.
1) Ice for 10m until numb
2) wash up, swab the area with rubbing alcohol
3) get some sanitary wipes or whatever ready to clean the area after
4) insert the needle and slowly drain, never let anything go back in the ear (air or fluid)
5) clean the ear (wipe, then rub alcohol again) and wash up
6) dispose of the used items.
7) let the ear set for 30m then ice as needed to keep swelling down.Tags: wresting cauliflower ear drain mma |
